The National Competence Centre for High-Performance Computing (HPC) in Austria is organizing a one-day training event in collaboration with ESiWACE3, the Centre of Excellence for Weather and Climate Simulation in Europe. This training is scheduled for 27 January 2025 and is titled Extrae and Paraver: Profiling Weather and Climate Applications.

This course focuses on the BSC performance analysis tools, which comprise a variety of tools designed to help developers evaluate, tune, and optimize their code. There are two main applications: Extrae, which generates trace files for post-mortem analysis without requiring any modifications to the source code, and Paraver, a flexible performance analyzer that works with the Extrae trace files. These tools support various programming models, including C/C++, Fortran, Python, MPI, and OpenMP, and they can also trace hardware counters and user-defined functions.

The course includes both a theoretical component and hands-on labs, allowing participants to practice analyzing an Extrae trace using Paraver. Presenters will demonstrate this with a climate application, focusing on common issues that arise from numerical models and computational fluid dynamics applications.
